The New England Patriots went to Miami as seven-point favourites and came home with a 24-19 win. That is the result that matters. It moves them to 5-3 overall and keeps their conference record at 5-1, the best mark in the division on that measure.

It was not a clean afternoon for anyone holding New England against the number. A five-point margin left the spread on the Dolphins' side. The 43 combined points cleared the 41.5 total. A win is a win in the standings, but the market had expected more separation than the Patriots produced.

The week

New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins: Patriots 24, Dolphins 19. New England did enough to win on the road against a Miami Dolphins side that is now 1-6. The Patriots closed at -7 and won by five, so Miami covered while losing. With 43 points scored, the over at 41.5 landed.

The gap between the result and the price is the useful part. The market priced New England as a clear class above a one-win team, and the scoreboard said the gap was closer than that. A five-point road win over a struggling division rival still counts the same in the table.

Where they stand

The Buffalo Bills lead the division on overall record at 6-1, with a 4-1 mark in conference play. New England sits a game and a half back overall at 5-3, but holds the better conference record at 5-1. That conference number could carry weight later in the season if the two finish level.

Below them, the gap is wide. The New York Jets are 2-6 overall and 2-3 in conference. Miami is 1-6 overall and 1-4 in conference after Sunday.

In short, this is a two-team race at the top and the Patriots are the second team in it. The win in Miami kept them within reach of Buffalo. It did not close the gap.

The desk

All four of the desk had a view on the Miami game, and the results split sharply.

Dr. Priya "The Quant" Raman went 3-0. She took New England to win, Miami +7 and the over at 41.5, which is close to an exact description of what happened: Patriots win, Dolphins cover, points land. She is now 6-3 on the season.

Vera "The Fade" Kowalski went 2-1. She had New England to win and the over, both correct, but laid the seven with the Patriots and lost that one. At 7-2 she still leads the desk for the season.

Lou "The Sharp" Marchetti went 1-2. Taking Miami +7 paid, but he also backed Miami to win outright and the under at 41.5, and both missed. He is 4-5 for the year.

Marcus "Film Room" Dawkins went 0-2. He laid the seven with New England and took the under, and the game went the other way on both. He is 1-5 on the season and has ground to make up.

The pattern was simple. Anyone who backed a comfortable Patriots win or a low-scoring game came up short. The picks that read this as a closer, higher-scoring game than the price suggested were the ones that paid.

What's next

At 5-3 with a 5-1 conference record, New England is where it needs to be to keep pressure on Buffalo, but the margins in Miami were thinner than the market expected and that is worth watching as the second half of the season begins. The upcoming fixtures, kick-off times and results across the league are on the schedule page, and the odds for the next Patriots game will be posted on its game page once the market opens.
